About Barcelona itself
Barcelona is a city on the coast of northeastern Spain. It is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Catalonia, as well as the second most populous municipality of Spain. With a population of 1.6 million within city limits, its urban area extends to numerous neighboring municipalities within the Province of Barcelona and is home to around 4.8 million people, making it the fifth most populous urban area in the European Union. It is one of the largest metropolises on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast.
Barcelona is one of the world’s leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural centers, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, sports, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the major global cities. It is a major cultural and economic center in southwestern Europe.
In this city visitors will find not only ancient places of interest, but also modern sights. In other words, Barcelona is a city that can easily suit the needs and tastes of every tourist. The most comfortable way of visiting numerous sights of Barcelona is simply walking around the city.
Eixample area. If you go upward from the very centre of Barcelona, Plaza Catalunya, you will find yourself in Eixample area. This district was built in the art nouveau style. Tourists will surely like the atmosphere of numerous posh shops, various cafes, bars and restaurants. We strongly advise you to go along beautiful and fascinating Paseo de Gracia Street, where, among a great number of monuments, you can find several works by Gaudi.
Gothic Quarter, Raval Quarter and boulevard de Ramblas. If you go downward from Plaza Catalunya, you’ll reach the ancient gothic Barcelona. One of the most famous boulevards in Europe – boulevard de Ramblas – will be on your right side. Tourists are also recommended to visit Raval Quarter with its Museum of Modern Art. Gothic Quarter with its marvellous Barcelona Cathedral will be located on your left. Without visiting this ancient part of the city your impression of Barcelona would be incomplete.
Barcelona is also the home of one of the world’s most famous football clubs, FC Barcelona.
